Backing Up over the Summer

Summer is almost here, so what better time to back up your computer! Here is a few simple suggestions you can follow to ensure your documents, music, and photos are safely archived in case something should happen to your computer:

  1. Ftp.hofstra.edu Type this URL (ftp.hofstra.edu) into most web browsers, and you can access network space provided to you by Hofstra where you can store school documents and papers. You can access it from anywhere in the world, and when you log onto the lab computers, this folder actually becomes your "F Drive". Be warned though, this ftp site only has 30 MB of space, so its probably more suited to storing Word and Excel documents, and not necessarily music or photos.
  2. External Hard-drives are a relatively inexpensive and solid way to permanently back up ALL of your data*picture, music, and documents. You should be able to pick one up at Best Buy or Circuit City, and they can store well over 80-100 GB of information. This is an ideal solution for backing up your music and pictures.
  3. USB KEYs are great for Portable file storage, USB keys now can come up to at least two gigs of space (last time I checked) and is a great way to temporarily backup your files (although for Permanent storage we recommend the External hard drive solution listed above).
  4. CDs/DVDs are still a good way to back up files as well, as most laptops have a CD or DVD burner these days.

For help with any of these things, please feel free to stop by the Law School Help Desk office at room 223 during open computer hours and a member of our staff will help you out!
